Kenya's first lady, H.E Margaret Kenyatta with LVCT's Executive Director Dr. Nduku Kilonzoo -------------------------------------------------

The inaugural edition of the First Lady's Half Marathon will be held this Sunday, the 9th of March in Nairobi. The marathon aims to raise funds for the Beyond Zero Campaign which seeks to reduce maternal and child deaths through the provision of mobile clinics and medical equipment for prenatal and postnatal treatment of less privileged women and children in the country.

On Sunday the 2nd February 2014, H.E the first lady Mrs. Margaret Kenyatta launched the inaugural First Lady’s Marathon in partnership with stakeholders in health sectors including NGO s and several wives of County Government Governors. The initiative is part of the recently launched “Beyond Zero Campaign” which seeks to raise funds to provide practical solutions for the nation’s HIV and AIDS, Child and Maternal health challenges.

Speaking at the event held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre grounds, the First Lady reiterated her personal commitment to promoting maternal, newborn and child health in the country. She called on Kenyans to take an active role to save lives of mothers and children. “Few of us know enough about HIV transmission from mothers to children or about improving maternal, newborn and child health. If we don’t raise awareness about this, nothing will happen. I will run to raise funds for access to better health care. I will run to ensure we keep mothers, newborns and children alive and healthy. I will run until we go beyond zero”, she said.

The Beyond Zero Campaign is a dynamic partnership between the government, civil society organizations within health sector, development partners and private sector organisations aimed at providing practical solutions to some of the most critical challenges facing Kenyans. The initiative seeks to raise funds to support millions of poor families and disadvantaged communities live a healthy and dignified life whilst giving new impetus to the fight against HIV and AIDS.
