Is it ok to have sex during my period, or is it too gross?

It really is a matter of personal taste.

Physically there is absolutely no problem with having sex during a woman’s period. In fact, many women experience a higher level of sexual desire during menstruation.

If you experience a heavy flow on some days of your period, you might want to avoid sex for a day or two each month. 

But if you really can’t resist, it’s possible to place a cervical cap inside the vagina to hold the flow during sex and then remove it afterward.

Here are a couple of reminders regarding sex during a woman’s period:

1. You can get pregnant even when you’re having your period! Sperm can survive for several days inside the vagina. 

If you experience an unusually short cycle, your partner’s sperm might hang around long enough to fertilize your next egg.

2. Due to the presence of blood and other body fluids, there is an increased risk of infection with sexually transmitted infections (stis) during your period. 

The use of a condom is therefore highly recommended.
