PICK-UP LINES AND FLIRTING

A pickup line is a short opening sentence or phrase that helps break the ice when approaching a stranger you are interested in. 

Men, in particular, tend to place a lot of importance on pick-up lines because they think that a strong opening could seriously increase their chances.

They often try to come up with new lines, exchange them with friends, rehearse them in front of a mirror and then try them in the field

The idea is that if you start a conversation with something funny, original, or smart, you will impress the person and set the right mood and the rest of the conversation will come easily. 

There are many types of pickup lines. Here are just a few. 

• Funny and cheesy: “Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?”
• Funny and smart: “I’ll bet you 500 shillings you are going to turn me down.”
• Funny and silly: “Hey, see my friend over there? He wants to know if you think I am cute.”
• Funny and nonsensical: “Hi my name is ______. How am I doing so far?”
• Funny and flattering: “I know I don’t stand a chance, but I just wanted to hear an angel talk.”

Remember

Pick up line sometimes do work and sometimes they don’t know. 

Opening with a pickup line is like starting a video game at an advanced level, where everything happens faster and there is much less room for error. This is definitely not the ideal way to approach a stranger. 

What is the best way to initiate a conversation?

The ideal approach is to open the conversation with a neutral, unthreatening topic that you and the other person might have in common. Here are some ideas: 

• If you are at school, open the conversation by talking about a class you are both taking
• If you are at the mall, pretend you have to find a present for a friend and ask for advice 
• If you are at a party or social event, open by talking about the venue, the guests, or how you know the host.

A simple opening about a neutral topic sends a signal that your only objective is to have a harmless conversation with someone who seems interesting. 

This will increase your chances of being received well. Once the conversation gets going, you can start to introduce more personal topics.
