What are contraceptives?

Contraceptives, also known as birth control, are designed to prevent pregnancy from happening. The most common birth control methods include the pill and IUD. But there are more options.

During sex, a woman can get pregnant if sperm or cum enters the vagina and reaches her eggs or ovaries.

There are different types of birth control methods which may work in a number of different ways including;

  • Keeping the egg and sperm apart
  • Stopping egg production
  • Stopping the combined sperm and egg attaching to the lining of the womb

Your choice of birth control should depend on the following factors;

  • Frequency of sexual activity
  • Number of sexual partners
  • Health
  • Desire to have children in the future.

Remember there is a contraceptive method to suit everyone.

Your health care provider can help you select the best form of birth control for you.
