Why porn won’t teach you much about real-life sex

Inexperienced viewers may see porn as an easy way to learn about sex. That, unfortunately, would be a big mistake!

In fact, while porn can give a pretty good idea of “what goes where”, it is quite useless when it comes to learning how real-life sex is performed.

Here are some of the major differences between porn and real-life sex:

  1. Body appearance

Porn actors tend to have similar body features. Men are often well-built and invariably “well equipped” (with a big penis), while women are usually thin, with large breasts.

Real people come in all sizes and shapes, and the good news is that our ability to enjoy sex and to give pleasure to our partners has nothing to do with our physical appearance.

  1. Male sexual organs

Porn actors are chosen for their “above average” equipment. So don’t start thinking that something is wrong with you “down there” simply because everyone in those movies looks bigger.

Average men are not like that. Also, experience will teach you that size has very little to do with how good you are at sex; it’s not how big it is that counts, it’s how well you use it!

  1. Female sexual organs

Female porn stars tend to have very similar vulvas. So similar, in fact, that one might be tricked into thinking that this is how a normal vulva is supposed to look.

In real life, no two vulvas look the same. Skin color ranges from light pink to brown. The clitoris can be quite big and visible, or small and completely hidden under the clitoral hood.

The two sets of labia (inner and outer) can vary widely in size and shape. All these variations are perfectly common.

  1. No hair down there

Male and female porn actors usually shave their pubic hair. Removal of pubic hair allows for cleaner shots of the sexual organs during close-ups.

Male actors have the added benefit that, without pubic hair, their penis looks longer. In real life, very few men and less than half of women trim or shave their pubic hair.

  1. Ready, steady, go

All porn movies start pretty much the same way: one moment the two actors are shaking hands, and the next they are having sex.

In real life, things are rarely like that. Sure, there might be times when partners are so aroused (sexually excited) that they are ready to “rock and roll” without any warm-up, but this is not the norm, especially for women.

Women, in fact, usually require extended foreplay to reach the level of arousal (sexual excitement) needed to enjoy penetration.

  1. The harder you thrust, the better

In porn, the harder and faster the man thrusts, the higher the pleasure for his partner.

In real life, the majority of sex partners prefer deeper and slower movements. And those that do like some energy definitely don’t want you to go at full speed all the time.

  1. Everybody loves oral sex

In porn, there is a lot of oral sex. In real life, many people don’t like performing oral sex; in fact, only half of couples engage in oral sex.

In addition, real-life oral sex is usually much softer and gentler than what is seen in porn.

Finally, forget those “deep throat” moves where the partner takes the entire penis into his/her mouth; they just don’t happen in real-life sex.

  1. The money shot

In almost all porn movies, sex ends with the man ejaculating (cum-ing) on the partner’s face (‘facial’) or on another area of the partner’s body.

In real life, sex rarely ends this way. In fact, many people not only don’t like it, but also find it humiliating.

  1. Men last forever

Porn actors seem able to last forever. In real life, the average duration of intercourse (from penetration to orgasm) is under five minutes.

  1. Anything goes

In porn movies, actors are always happy to engage in any and every sexual activity: vaginal sex, oral sex, anal sex, group sex—anything goes.

In real life, people have preferences and limits. Your partner might like or be willing to do certain things but not others, and you have to respect that.

  1. All the fun and none of the risks

Porn is entertainment, so there is no mention of negative things like the risks associated with sex: STIS, HIV, unwanted pregnancies.

And in porn movies, actors rarely use condoms. In real life, these risks are very real, and everyone must take the proper precautions.
