Behind Closed Doors: My Condom Breakage Nightmare - Nick 19
A journey to the chemist
My experience with a condom burst was scary as hell. I was only 19 and had just started having conversations about sex with my first girlfriend. We talked about the importance of using condoms because of the TV adverts.
When my girlfriend and I decided we were both ready to have sex, I went to the chemist to buy a pack of condoms. I felt embarrassed asking the chemist attendant to give me condoms because she would instantly know that I would have sex. I waited until there was no other client in the chemist before I asked her for a pack. She handed me a pack. I paid and almost ran out of that place.
Setting the scene
Later that evening, my girlfriend came over to my place. In our little bubble, we happily watched moves and talked. As time progressed, one thing led to another, and eventually, we had sex. Even though it was my first time using a condom, I pretended to know how to put it on. I had a glance at the instructions and slipped it on. I asked her once more if she was ready before commencing enjoyment.
Panic
After we were done, I realized that the condom had burst. It was my first time using it, so I had not worn it properly. From that moment on, a good evening turned into a nightmare. My girlfriend started crying! I also panicked so much that I just sat there with my hands on my head. “What will happen if I get pregnant?” She asked. Her words reverberated in my mind. What if she got pregnant? I was only 19 and a first-year student. How could I be a father? What would I tell my parents? Would they support me with the child?
Teamwork to a solution.
We had calmed down after a while. We discussed what happened and agreed that we were not ready to be parents yet. We did some research online about what to do when a condom bursts.
We found a site called one2one where we learnt that emergency pills can be taken within three days after an emergency, such as a condom burst which would prevent pregnancy. This information brought a lot of relief us that we were able to sleep. Early the following day, we went to get the pills together. While at the chemist, I was instructed on how to put on a condom properly to avoid such accidents
Message to the public
When having sex for the first time, it is important to learn how to put on a condom. You could get the information from a chemist as I did, or if you are slightly embarrassed, there are experts like one2one where you can get verified information. I also learned that they have a free hotline to call, 1190, and you will get the assistance you need. In case the condom bursts, emergency pills help prevent unplanned pregnancies.
