What is the best position for the first time?

For the first time you have sex, it’s best to keep things simple and go for a basic position, such as missionary (man on top) or cowgirl (woman on top).

The missionary position is probably the most frequently chosen position, given that it is pretty straightforward. 

In this position, the woman lies on her back with her legs spread apart and the man lies on top of her with his legs between the woman’s legs.

The only issue with the missionary position is that the woman’s role is pretty passive; the man has nearly full control over penetration and decides on the speed, depth, and strength of his movements. 

Because a woman having sex for the first time is more at risk of experiencing discomfort than a man is, it is crucial that she verbally guide her partner by telling him if she wants him to change his movements in any way—for example, to slow down, to speed up, or to penetrate more or less deeply.

In the cowgirl position, the man lies on his back and the woman sits or squats on top of him with his body between her legs. 

In this position the woman is mostly in control; she determines the depth and intensity of penetration. 

Despite the potential advantages and the fact that the position is very popular overall, very few couples choose it for their first time. 

Men tend to prefer a position that puts them in control, especially for the first few times, and women often feel inexperienced and leave the initiative to their partners.

Another plus of the missionary position could be the level of intimacy it provides. 

With the man lying on top of the woman, the partners’ faces are naturally very close, allowing eye contact, whispering, and kissing. 

This is a bit more difficult when the woman is on top, particularly if she is squatting.
