Will I bleed the first time I have sex?

You might.

Roughly half of women bleed a bit during their first time. This is due to the tearing of the hymen, the thin layer of skin that partially reduces the vaginal opening.

An erect penis is usually bigger than the vaginal opening, but the vagina has the ability to enlarge and adjust to the size of the penis, especially when the woman is fully aroused.

The hymen, despite some flexibility, is unable to stretch after a certain point, so it often tears, causing some pain and sometimes a small amount of bleeding.

Why doesn’t everybody bleed?

Because everybody is different! Some women have a very small or flexible hymen, and penetration doesn’t tear it.

Others are born without a hymen. And many women tear their hymens before the first time they have sex by doing other activities, such as certain sports.

The best way to reduce the possibility of bleeding during your first time is to prepare yourself.

Whenever you masturbate, try stretching out your vaginal opening by gently pressing your finger against your vaginal walls.

Also make sure you are fully lubricated before your boyfriend initiates penetration (you can add a few drops of artificial lubricant if needed), and recommend that your partner enter slowly while using an in-and-out motion.
