Teenage Pregnancy, Growth and Resilience-Sarah 24

We lacked proper knowledge about sexual health

My name is Sarah and at the tender age of seventeen, I got into a relationship with a charming young man named Mark. We shared a profound emotional connection and trusted each other completely. As our relationship progressed, we made the decision to take the next step and engage in a sexual relationship. However, both Mark and I were naive and lacked proper knowledge about sexual health and the importance of protection.

I got pregnant

Tragically, it wasn't long before I discovered that I was pregnant. Fear and uncertainty overwhelmed me, and I turned to Mark, expecting him to support me through this challenging time. To my utter dismay, he abandoned me, denying any responsibility for the pregnancy. I was shattered. The reality of being a young, unmarried, and pregnant woman with no emotional or financial support hit me hard. The weight of my choices pressed upon my shoulders, and I struggled with an overwhelming sense of guilt, shame, and isolation.

I kept the baby

But even in the depths of despair, I found the strength to rise above my circumstances. I made the courageous decision to keep the baby and continue with my education. With the support of my family and a few close friends, I managed to bring up my child and that gave me hope for a better future. Despite the numerous challenges I faced, I refused to let my dreams just slip away.

Light at the end of the tunnel

With determination and perseverance, I excelled in my medical degree. Armed with newfound expertise, I joined local clinics and organizations, dedicating my time and energy to educating young people about sexual health. I have been emphasizing the importance of protection and the potential consequences of irresponsible behaviour. Through my work, I have been inspiring countless individuals to take charge of their sexual health, promoting healthy relationships and the use of protection. I have transformed my personal tragedy into a driving force for change, leaving a profound impact on the lives of those I encounter.

Knowledge is power

To young people out there, having proper knowledge about sexual and reproductive health is very important. Use protection every time you are engaging in sex to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancies and contracting diseases. For anyone who found themselves in early pregnancy, do not lose hope. You will rise, just like I did.
