"I kept feeling like a failure"

Marcus is 26 years of age and one of my friends. He is married to one wife and has three children, one of whom is in university, while the other two are in secondary school. His children have been sent away from school several times due to a lack of school fees. His wife is a housewife. He keeps on feeling that life is hard and questions his life existence. He keeps feeling like a failure as he is unable to provide for his family

Cry for Help

One day, Marcus posted on a Facebook platform that he wanted to end his life because he was depressed and unable to fend for his family. He knew 0

nobody would question him, as he had not put a real profile to his account and was using a pseudo name. Considering he had shared with me that he has a pseudo account on Facebook and had shared the name, I reached out to him and asked him to call 1190 for support.

Online Counselling Works

When he reached out to 1190, the counsellor wanted to establish if he was working and the nature of his work. He mentioned that he is employed and also runs a business, although the business is not stable at the moment. This is one of the things that made him feel helpless.

The counsellor worked together with him to come up with ways that he could employ to generate more income to enable him better cater for both his and his family's needs. Some of the ways included re-looking at where he had failed in business so that he could map out a plan to help mitigate the loopholes to ensure the business makes profits moving forward.

During the final session, he mentioned that he had formulated solid interventions for his business that he felt would help him generate more income. As a result of the support he received from the hotline, Marcus has subsequently found more purpose in life and thanked us for the insight we gave him.
