Therapy works for People with Addiction - Mia 20
"I can't remember a day I went without a drink."
While trying to force a raging tide of memories on the days that I spent sober on my campus life, memories of night clubbing kept running through my mind. I can't remember a day that I went without a drink.
Just a try. I thought It was Fun
I was only a 20-year-old girl who had joined campus to make my dreams come true, but everything started going down. My friends started partying, and I wondered, "Why shouldn't I try it just once and experience it myself?" I found myself drinking here and there and calling it fun since I saw nothing wrong with it until it started affecting my health, relationships with family and friends, and grades. I was struggling to stop, but it was all in vain. I started being stressed, withdrew from friends, and even missed school.
I also received Therapy sessions.
It took time, but I gathered enough strength to reach out to my parents, and they encouraged me to seek professional help. The next day they took me to a rehabilitation centre. In the rehab, I found many people who suffered from addiction, which made me realize that I wasn't the only one going through it. I was given medication to help my body recover from the effects of the alcohol. I also received therapy sessions and was told what alcohol does to the body, especially the brain and the liver. I was shocked after seeing the images of an addict's liver and how damaged it was.
It took time to convince my family.
We were exposed to new ideas of how to view life. I was introduced to new hobbies and realized I am a talented dancer. Others got themselves stuck in documentaries, reading novels and singing. They accommodated us well until we overcame and supported us in our vulnerable times.
What next?
After I left rehab, it took time to convince my family and friends that I was a changed person, but with time, they saw for themselves that I was different. I am now celebrating five years sober. I secured a job and have a happy family, thanks to the rehab and the hospitable community.
Never too late
It's never too late to seek help. My story is to encourage someone struggling with addiction to seek help and is also a story of hope and resilience that addiction can be overcome. Your journey to recovery won't be easy, but it's worth the wait, and you will overcome it just like I did.
